Monika Held lebt in Hamburg und Nordfriesland. Sie hat Verlagskauffrau gelernt, anschließend volontiert und sich nach kurzen Gastspielen als Redakteurin für die Arbeit als freiberufliche Jounalistin entschieden.
Nach einem »Angebot, das man nicht ausschlagen kann«, (Sie können überall hinreisen, wo eine gute Geschichte wartet) wurde sie bei der Zeitschrift Brigitte festangestellte Autorin. Für ihre Reportagen u.a. aus Rumänien, Albanien, Syrien, Guatemala wurde sie mit dem Deutschen Sozialpreis und dem Elisabeth-Selbert-Preis ausgezeichnet.
Als sie feststellte, dass 18.000 Zeichen nicht ausreichen, um eine ganze Geschichte zu erzählen, versuchte sie es mit dem Format ›Roman‹.
Der Schrecken verliert sich vor Ort wurde in sieben Sprachen übersetzt. Gemeinsam mit dem Kontrabassisten Gregor Praml hat sie daraus mit den Mitteln Musik, Sprache, Originalton eine KonzertLesung entwickelt (In Auschwitz gab es keine Vögel), mit der sie auch in Schulen auftritt. Erzählt wird die Geschichte des Wiener Kommunisten Hermann Reineck, dessen Kernsätze aktueller nicht sein können: »Achtet auf die Sprache. Sie meinen, was sie sagen und sie machen, was sie meinen.«
Mit dem Frankfurter Kulturorganisator Werner Heinz und dem Musiker Oliver Leicht hat sie ihren Roman Trümmergöre in ein Libretto verwandelt.
Im Aufbau Verlag ist ihr sechster Roman Der Sommer der Puppen erschienen. Im Kulturmaschinen Autoren-Verlag wird Der Mandant erscheinen. Ein Asylkrimi.
