Gesa Schröder, geboren 1952 in Dithmarschen an der Nordsee, hat in Kiel und Frankfurt Germanistik, Geographie, Latein und Italienisch studiert. Zwischen 1988 und 1999 lebte sie mit ihren drei Töchtern überwiegend in Venedig und hat dort als Literaturübersetzerin und Dolmetscherin gearbeitet. Danach war sie im Schuldienst tätig und lebt seit 2016 als Autorin in Hamburg und Venedig. Ihr erster Roman Flussaufwärts durch die Zeit erschien 2020 (2024 in einer Neuauflage im Kulturmaschinen Verlag), der zweite Roman Auf der Passhöhe wurde 2022 veröffentlicht und 2024 kam ihr erster Regiokrimi Die Posaune im Watt heraus.

Die 69-jährige Dorothea erhält Anfang der 1990er Jahre die Diagnose Bauchspeicheldrüsenkrebs und erfährt, dass sie in einem Jahr sterben wird. Nach einem Leben voller Opfer und enttäuschter Glückserwartungen versucht sie, den bevorstehenden Tod durch eine Reise in die Vergangenheit zu verarbeiten. Sie macht sich auf die Suche nach einer verlorenen Liebe, einem tschechischen Kriegsgefangenen, der auf ihrem Bauernhof gearbeitet hat. Mit ihrer Tochter, der 40-jährigen Reiseführerin Johanna, reist sie entlang der Elbe, von Hamburg bis zur Quelle im tschechischen Riesengebirge, der Heimat des Kriegsgefangenen. Dabei wird in Rückblenden ihr Leben von den 20er bis zu den 80er Jahren wachgerufen.
