Dorothea Renckhoff wurde in Witten an der Ruhr geboren, studierte in Bochum Literatur- und Theatergeschichte, dazu Filmtheorie bei Hilmar Hoffmann. Auf Praktika im Journalismus und am Theater folgte das erste feste Engagement als Assistentin für Regie und Dramaturgie am Schauspielhaus Bochum bei Peter Zadek, der ihr die erste Übersetzung anvertraute (‚Ich war Hitlers Dienstmädchen’) und ihr Kontakte zu Autoren wie Tankred Dorst oder Regisseuren wie Werner Schroeter oder R. W. Fassbinder verschaffte. Als Dramaturgin und Chefdramaturgin arbeitete sie später an diversen deutschen Bühnen, u. a. der Freien Volksbühne Berlin bei Kurt Hübner und den Städtischen Bühnen Münster bei Karl Wesseler. Dabei galt ein Schwerpunkt ihrer Arbeit der Wiederentdeckung vergessener Exilautoren.
Da sich diese Arbeit auf Dauer als unvereinbar mit der verantwortungsvollen Erziehung von zwei Kindern erwies, beendete sie ihre Theaterkarriere, lebt seitdem als freischaffende Autorin und Theaterübersetzerin in Köln und ist seit 2008 Mitglied im PEN-Zentrum Deutschland.
Zu ihren wichtigsten Veröffentlichungen zählen die Theaterstücke ‚Das klingende Haus’ (Uraufführung Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg 2001) und ‚Glanz und Verdunkelung’ (U 2013 in Wien), die Libretti ‚Der blaue Vogel’ (Musik Harald Banter, U 1999 Theater Hagen) und ‚Epimetheus oder die Geburt der Hoffnung aus der Musik’ (Musik Siegfried Matthus, U Audi Max RUB Bochum 2015), eine Biographie über Willy Millowitsch (1996) und der Roman ‚Verfallen’ (2014). Daneben stehen über 40 Übersetzungen von Theaterstücken, darunter ‚Shakespeares sämtliche Werke – leicht gekürzt’ mit über 100 Neuinszenierungen im deutschen Sprachraum.

Im Ramadan segelt der Ich-Erzähler von Sansibar auf die Nachbarinsel Tumbatu. Dort wächst ein heiliger Baum am Ufer, vor dem sich einstmals der Schiffbruch einer Sklaven-Dhau zugetragen hat. Durst und Hitze setzen dem weißen Touristen zu, er halluziniert die Geschichte der Sklaven. Dabei wird er von dem Heiler Salumba unterstützt, der den Weißen zugleich für seine Neugier kritisiert.
